Again here , I include the compiled listing with women
In order to keep this listing as concise as possible please do the following:
- Cut and paste the listing (it is alphabetical order ) - mention the popularity by a number 1 to 5 with 1 unknown, 5 as legendary - mention the times by decade

The previous (and older ) times I have crawled across various sources and compiled a listing of Malay singers and groups which then have been separated into female and male listings . In these listings there are also the names of my collection . Since I am not living in Malaysia , I really wonder how/if they were (or are ) famous or not .
Below you will find the first part with the Malay males (and male groups ) . If someone has the time and the courage to fill the listing with how popular someone is (or was ) and in which time , I would be much more than happy for his help In order to keep this listing as concise as possible please do the following:
- Cut and paste the listing (it is alphabetical order ) - mention the popularity by a number 1 to 5 with 1 unknown, 5 as legendary - mention the times by decade
Surely the listing is not complete and Sudirman and P Ramlee are not referred here. If you think that are several others are not mentioned here please notice them ! Hope that this listing can help not only me but also other Malays of this site

A notice before the names: When I was on Bali I recorded abot 70 songs from the local FM including ca 50 dangdut songs from Radio R , most of them were joget dangdut that made me surpass my interest in malay music with their lovely rhythm. And also several people later who listened to my dangdut material were also quite interested (but not fond as me ) in listening. Unfortunately , from the 1000+ songs I totally collected in the next years –from friends albums or personal commercial purchases , only a few met the standard of the first heard songs. It is very sad …
Below is a small list of the singer material I have.
In case you did not read my previous blog page , in very short, after the trip in Bali on 2000 I have at first purchased from a online indo company on 2001 , then received two collections from frinds on 2002-3-4, and on 2005+ 6 made indirect purchase from 3 contact persons living in Indonesia , all of them are original albums . Also on end of 2006 looked on Multiply but did not fond any significant material except some latest hits … duh : (
And hmmm let me start … (and by the way if ou look at my reviews page: you wil find the list of songs I like most ) Evie Tamala or Evieta : very nice voice though melancholic with a broad range of ‘dangdutized’ music ie from very light to somehow folkie or hard-folkie (though I don’t like to say this way .. ) there are several songs I like but are also many tht I donot like. For example my favorites are kerinduan, , suara hati , selamat malam and generally of same kind including unplugged versions as of getaran and kekal and takdir
Imam Arifin : another great voice for me with many more favorite songs than Evie’s. Very sweet voice for a man. Annie is my best
Delia Paramitha : does anyone know her? One of the nicest voices , found on Evieta collection singing ‘ I love you’ a nice easy listening dangdut
Cici Paramida : I hope that still someone knows her. Another singer with great songs from her RT5 RW3 , jangan tunggu lamalama (92 my wife’s best dangdut song) to the pop styled ‘galau’ ‘bulan merindu’ and ‘candu asmara’
Iis dahlia : another singer that I like and dislike the same time. Quite melancholic as Evieta Liking her dangdut and easy pop dangdut songs (tanda cinta, kecewa etc ) I don’t like several versions of ‘foreign’ songs (seroja , kuch kuch hota hai ,fatwa pujanga )
Ida Laila : the second nicest voice after Delia P , with Hindi style dangdut. Most of them are very nice to me
Ikke Nurjannah : herd first in Bali from the tapes I bought , her soft pop dangdut songs made me nice impression. Also later her colleksi terbaik with sung sing suwe and other soft pop dangdut songs were too impressive to my ears. In total I prefer her soft pop songs as well her Jawa .
Ona Sutra : also another man with nice voice but his songs have nearly the same style. But titi cintaku is one of the first hearing from him in Bali
Lilis Karlina: (cinta terisoalsi and a terbaik collection) Quite impressive from the time I heard it on 2000 and relatively exotic with her rock sunda
Endang kurnia : very cool man I think with a funny mix of rock with dangdut. Two persons were laughing with his style .
Ria Amelia – I think cinta kasih ku is of her , one of her songs , heard on bali 2000 which was too emotional with its flute. Her latest SMS was quite interesting on the start but afterwards destroys itself …
Iyeth Bustani (2005 ? ) is she indo or Malay? Her zapin album differs totally from the above and is an album that I love
Vivien Livania : (2006 ) An all kind dangdut(?) singer . Having her 4th album all her songs give nice impression. Rock and classic dangdut together. ‘Example for imitation’ as we Greeks say.
Yolanda : (2006 )(dangdut bersinar lagi) Goes second to Vivien with a nice and rich pure dangdut collection
Aksay : (arjuna dangdut )He is together with Vivien . Nice mixture with rock
Uut Permatasari : no comments but quite interesting in her tak jujur album
Rana rani: One of the standard dangdut singers with her totally own style. Very interesting .
And many others to notice without any comments
Counters : Rhoma Irama : though most of you cold vote him the ‘bestest’ . I vote against him; first that I am not so much based on lyrics (I only look into music as I have not so much time now to translate his lyrics) Al of his songs make me indifferent except the music versions form others and the song ‘mirasantika’ that has a better music and rhythm .several of his songs are also too
Inul daratista : I know mostly from her video clips since 2002 when she was too ‘rocking’ herself .The counter goes to her new pop diva look
Isna Tania (2006 ) : a woman as singing to karaoke . Marginal is the rinduku di sungai musi , clone of cindai (Siti Nurhaliza ) and slightly better is ‘tebak2dua manggis’
Eva darnia : same with the Isna, poor voice , but giving a more exotic sound with her sunda tone . ‘Playboy cap jengkol’ is just a Sunda rock and roll dangdut song that separates from the remain songs

I think hat the groups I liked at most are jiwang or rock ; See the list here :
- Febians :: possibly my best of the rock/jiwang groups. One of the few groups tapes to use in my car. Some friends hearing them found too erotic ….. I have too albums of them ‘keungulan’ and ‘lang buana’ - May (mostly the older ) Goes second to Febians . There are too many songs that I like from hard ballads to HM songs. - Candy, possibly the only feminine rock group ? MY ‘feminine’ Febians . Nice ballads and nice rock songs in their Candy album but not too emotional . Neither too heavy. Kristal Noticed from the radio Muzik. Easy listening rock group is my latest favorite group - DGC : very funny group with a strange singing style. Very nice to be heard. - Ukays : My best ballad group. Many times I have played several of them in guitar and in the car. - Spring : Lestari Exist and Slam and Iklim are together as jiwang groups
| Category: | Music | | Genre: | Other | | Artist: | - |
- Ramlah Ram : She was my first ever named Malay singer, heard at first in my trip in Singapore on 89. Suwah records on ca93 has identified her name after sending them a tape. They sent me the following tapes: cinta ku hanyut , kau kuci , lagu hit ahmad nawab , duri dalam cinta .and possibly dangdut I was impressed and same time disliked several songs of her There were also several that I disliked as teratai , most of her dangdut songs
The song s I liked most are found in my first reviews blog here
-Rahim Maarof : found from a guy working in UK on mid 90s. Rahims voice is too sensual. Some of the songs I liked are; istana menanti , kasih ku (heard ion Spore on 89 and again on the big tower on 2000) ,
-Ayati : I fond the name recently. I was strongly impressed with her song dimata cinta one of my very top favorites . One of my ideal voices .
-Aishah: The second Malay singer I knew from the older times. Having her 5th and 6th album (untuk apa and tak akhirnya ) , I understand that only her first 2-3 albums are a real value. ‘Bayangan’ song I think is her best of all with many others to follow. One of my ideal voices again
-Yantzen either as member of May or himself , I liked his voice quite much
-Amy Search: I prefer his ballads . Isabella is my best of him and one of my Malay favorite song . Very nice was his cooperation with Inka Christie singing the ‘cinta kita’- version of ‘fantasia bulan madu’ . For several people his pitches in this song are quite funny
-Ella: : also one of my favorite singers. Heard a song of her on 1990 from Suara Malaysia, that I have not found anywhere . Speaking on the chorus it goes;
kekasih ku dayangi akan diriku somebody love kepadanya yang kenayata”
I have lost the song but this is what I cold still remember. Does anyone know this? Kasih , maar putih ,gemilang and the previously mentioned are my favorites
-Ramli Sarip::is he a rocker? I liked several of his ballads, There is a slow ballad of him that I still do not know the title
-Misha Omar:: One of my recent and best , being third between Aisha and Ayati. Found after a greek frind visited the country . Very highly impressed with both her albums , though I don’t like her R&B ones . Siti Sarah rates same …. Also ideal voices
-Zaiton Sameon: : another that her songs have impressed me very much the older times and made me hooking and ‘singing’ her songs . Recently recognized. Very passionate. My top of her are kabut serangkai , manaruh harapan, antara kau dan aku etc
-Rohana Jalil and Jamal: : Also quite much for both of them liked both of their style
-Erra , Fauzia , Liza H :: They are gone next to Misha and S Sarah having songs better than their voices
-Zamani :: one of the nicest male voices I heard Mamat’s comes second
Unknown: when on Nigeria , I heard a song that I call ‘ kupendang rindu cintaku padamu’ that somes from the ernd of the chorus and is uploaded – in very bad audio , in this link: I liked him as he is singing very passionately ….
And my counters:
Mini counter: Siti Nurhaliza : yes but… . I prefer her singing slow songs. Same point to Ramlah
Amelina: my impression or her is that she sings childish, she is the top singer of my wife !
Anti - Hit Leina /eh dangdut/ : does she think that her songs are good? Too bad….

[ If you did not started from here please visit my fist part before reading the below text ] • With the above , till 95 I have totally recorded 300 Malay songs and 50 Indo from shortwaves .I could listen to the VoM before the 1700 LT ie before the Russian station started. There were days the stations from the nearby frequencies that were inaudible at least for one hour (VoR or RFI ). • On 95 I connected to the internet via the first ever commercial ISP, Compulink , to which I was a member till their sudden closure on 2004. I have made some contacts with Malaysia and USA , and bought or exchanged some Malay tapes via them . One of then has visited my city, Thessaloniki later. • Another , from Malaysia , was very cooperative and was used as a link for buying tapes and several books including Malay dictionaries . I collected more than 70 tapes • On 97 one of these friends has sent me two 4hour tapes , recorded from the local TV channels with a total of 16 hrs of music videos. One of these videotapes was full of Chinese music with little Indian , The other tape was filled with dangdut , pop indo and Malay (western style!) And this is how I knew dangdut! Please keep this info for now • On 99 I friend of me was a nearly constant user of Napster and downloaded for me about 24 songs including dangdut . The Malay hits from these were gerimis mengudang (Slam) seiras (Way’s) and the dhut ones were selamat malam [evie tamala ] kopi dangdut [famhi sahab] That was my second acquaintance with dangdut • On 2000 we made a trip on Spore Bali and Bangkok with my wife. Buying a new AIWA walkman iun Spore , our first point of the trip , and using it together with my older walkman , I have recorded about 10 C90 tapes from Spore, using a ‘geeky’ 2-station recording, in our free time in the hotel . Visiting also the Malay bazaar place, I have bought 30 original Malay tapes.
MY top station listening on Spore was RTM#1. Among the 140 songs recorded , my most preferences were insan (Yantzen) , bilaku rindu (Siti fairuz), ku keudara lagi ( Fran), kau yang bernama seri (?), Venus(!) and some others I don’t remember . The chief person of the Malay music store did not made any discounts tough I have bought too much material. And they insisted into taking local money , instead of USD … Among the tapes I bought were penaklukan ( May) , Farra , Kory etc • In Bali we stayed for 6 days. I there have recorded about 7 tapes including musik from a local dangdut station called Radio R that made me hoook into it with its l[o/i]vely dangdut songs • 9 song out of 60 are referred into this page http://zlgr.multiply.com/music/item/124In Kuta I have bought about 5 tapes with dangdut , that included two collections from the most popular songs of 2000 , an album from Evie Tamala . Lilis Karlina .
I still remember that a mini group who sung on our table , the very first night , refused to sing for us the song of Tamala’s ‘selamat malam’ and only played ‘balinese’ songs (these seems as latin at most ! ). • Returning back I have converted my collection into MP3s starting from the dangdut songs in Bali, then for shortwaves etc. I was quite disturbed into listening always the same series of songs…. My conversions: shortwaves were converted to 8 ,11 and 16 kbs as , as higher bit rates were not necessary Fm recordings were converted to 96 kb and seemed identical Cassettes have been converted to 112 and 128 and still were identical to my ears . I have used a professional quality double deck AIWA to record these albums • Moving to in Retziki after marriage (1998), a mountain point 6 km from the centre , and though having set a better shack, listening to VoM and RRI was a bad idea: • • Radio Republik Indonesia seem always changing their minds and transmitting or not in their standard frequencies . VoM’s signal was much lower in the new house !! • And then the big but: after 2000 my interest in Malay music passed to dangdut. • IN 2001 I tried to buy dangdut tapes from a Indonesian online source. Until the order about 3 months passed in order for them to collect the material • ON 2002 I have made new contacts to collect several dangdut tapes, found from the newsgroups. One was a girl from Danemark , She sent me all her dangdut collection, ca 20 xC90 original tapes. I have converted into MP3 CDs for myself and her , and returned her tapes back. • ON 2003 or 2004 the second person now from USA has sent as gift 15 tapes with dangdut of mid 80s when he was living in Jakarta . • ON 2004-5 I had a continuous correspondence with a person near Jakarta who sold me a moderate amount of tapes and DVDs with indo movies etc All original material. About 20 tapes in total , several history books and DVDs • ON Sept 2005 , in the local international fair of Thessaloniki, Indonesia had a pavilion .Many exhibitors. I have made friendships with two of them who later (5 months after!! ) sold me a total of 60 dangdut tapes. • Back to radio on 2003-4 I found the solution with Warna on times 1400-1600 UTC . I preferred to just listen to the station than making any recordings. Warna had better program than the latest program schedule of VoM , as they play older songs , 60s 70s and jiwang that I like most. . On 2006 this frequency was engaged by VOA Korean till 1500, and starting summer time 2007 Romania’s RRI transmits on 1500-1600 so no chance then to listen to them except their other services as City Sounds – 6000(chinese ) and Oli on 7270 kHz • I am very happy however that adding a basic DSL line at the end of 2006 I can listen to Warna and Ria via the net. Though the quality is for dialup connections , thus telephonic audio, and despite many gaps in audio , I still preferred to listen mostly to Warna until…. : . • ……. When I found RADIO MUZIK. I do not know if this station is the RTM 2 as I knew from my radio book sources but the station seems having a nice mixture with Malay and ‘foreign’ songs. I now prefer listening to this station for much time.

This is the first page of a 2 page text and is reply closed . after reading this page please visit the second part and then reply , thank you The following text is a modified and enhanced version of my older webpage on geocities with some explanations of the radio tech terminology .The original text has been written in 2000 and here are many updates and text refines . As the history is very big I have split it in three parts : At first do not forget that as a Greek man I am living in Thessaloniki N Greece, and these two kinds , Malay and dangdut are the only music kinds I listen … PART 1 - • 89-90 After being in a trip in HK , Bangkok Phuket and Spore on 15-30 Aug 1989, I recorded 7 tapes from the local stations in FM with mostly tai [from the local tai stations], hindi/tamil , Malay and Chinese music. Although Chinese was ( and still is in regards to the totally :westernized standards ) the nicest of them, with Malay to follow and then Thai (with still very nice songs) I was ‘adhered’[hooked?] to the Malay that seemed to me very emotional and kept me with a very strong passion with it. The cassette recorder has been bought in Hong Kong and was an Aiwa model The Malay station was Warna ,[the only that time ] while in Spore I had also recoded from City Sounds [chinese] and Oli [Hindi /Tamil]. I had no interest in listening to the local English stations or BBC Among the songs I heard/kept that time from Warna were .kasih ku from Rahim Maarof , Ramlah ram’s cinta ku hanyut di lautan sepi , Gersang’s itu suratan takdir Alleycat’s suara kekasih ,another’s oh Fatima , ku petik bintang2[KRM] rantau abang [R Buang], one still unidentified from Illusi, and possibly Jamal [engkaulah yang kusayang ]. Several other very important songs but still unidentified , I heard that magnetized me are found here http://zlgr.multiply.com/music/item/105 The most important Chinese songs I heard was the, yiduo xiaohua /zaihui shou, and chankei nide ke [singing your song ] the latest two originated from Taiwan • Following this, starting on 1990, I tried in listening (and recording tapes) from the Suara Malaysia (SM) on shortwaves (15295kHz ) with the use of Sony’s radio ICF 7600 (a digital world band shortwave radio ) connected by cable into SILVER (an analog world radio with cassette player) with for further recording . Suara Malaysia transmits on 1530 UTC or 1730 Greek time. Several times I could catch it on 1515+ . It starts with bamar program on 1515-1530UTC then with Arabic till 1700UTC and ends with Malay program till 1855UTC . In contrast to other stations and its more recent policy, its programming consisted mostly with music so that more than 2,5 hours per day in their 4 hour transmission could be played. Half of the music in the Arab program was/ is Malay. There are also other several times as in the morning local time but it cannot be heard.. I used a 10 + 5 meter wire to connect to the Sony radio (5 meters are over the walls ) , on the top floor on a 7 floor building. As the signal that time was relatively good , there were several important factors that destroyed reception: :
strong interference from RFI – Radio France International , a ‘powerhouse’ signal transmitting on 15300 kHz (+5 kHz ) nearly all day strong interference from VoR –Voice of Russia , another ‘powerhouse’ signal transmitting on 15290 kHz (-5kHz )the same times. Both of these are at least 1000 times stronger than VoMalaysia’s signal VoP(Voice of Friendship from Russia too) transmitting after 1730UTC on 15295 kHz (same frequency nearly same power as others sometimes Suara Malaysia suffered from very low audio / and he most important due to shortwave band transmission it suffered from propagation / fading , For those who do not know what this means , the signal can be once strong and the next two minutes poor. A good example is to look into your radio on (MW) medium waves and listen at night to remote stations (ie 2000 km far from your site), You may watch on how these stations interfere each other. Also tuning off your radio from a very strong MW station, and trying to listen to the next poor signal , you will listen on how the strong station can ruin the signal of the poor signal. A third case is that today the signal can be good , the next day it cannot be head due to ‘no circuit’!!
As in result the signal relatively fair, under two very strong signals in between. This caused ‘hratch’ sounds from the nearby stations. The total audio was fair at best , nearly telephonic inappropriate for ‘pleasure’ listening Several songs I heard that time, and I liked much include: kabut serankgai mawar [Zaiton Sameon], a still unrecognized song from Ella [kembali padanya yang kenyata?], some from Hetty Koes Endang , rindu kasih [Ram] , kerna dia [rohana jalil] , bila rindu ku sebut namamu [Siti fairuz] , Isabella [the famous song ] and sekian lama ku merindui (a folk song ). I am not totally sure if all of them heard on 90 or later. • This reason also made me being again very active on the Shortwaves after several years of inactivity ! • Next year on 91 I was in Nigeria working on some sat systems works and used some local radios to listen and taping music from VoM for a total of 150 songs in a period of 2 months Conditions there were quite better in terms of interference .Both nearby stations as V of Friendship were there quite poor that made a minimum interference to the station. Just some whistles under a fair signal Audio still nearly telephonic. The station seems pre-taping some music program and playing it several times. For example the B sides from kau kunci and duri dalam cinta from Ramlah has been played at least two times . Same was with two other singes one of them is found here: ‘21 syng d msia’ [sayangi dalam Malaysia ] in the http://zlgr.multiply.com/music/item/113 There were more than 6 songs from this singer in series , and heard at least 3 times Several of the songs I liked and some recently recognized were cinta nusantara [sheqal], keresahan [S.Aini], , rayuan ku [R Jalil and many other from her too ] angan angan [a sogn that I think did not recorded but ] , norsila’s ku suidah jatuh hati /ka ducapan mu [norshila amin ] several from P ramlee, the song susah teneng kita bersama [N Wahab/Ram], , terasing [Sudirman}, dimata cinta [Ayati Tasrip ] sendiri [May ,also Jamal ]and many others that be noticed below The station could be heard nearly in all its broadcasting time 1530 to 1900 UTC . 92-93 were also a good period in Thessaloniki for listening though signal started to lower a bit down The Russian stations of Voice of Friendship has terminated programming on shortwaves and left the frequency clear . But a neon lamp somewhere in the building started making a recurring noise . As an example listen to the ‘93#12A2 bersama kita’ at the end of the above page http://zlgr.multiply.com/music/item/113 .There is a ‘hratch’ sound every 1-1.5 second . And it was one of the best receptions of that time as that day the frequency neighbors had no circuit to our point .
Three music kinds that impressed me for that period 90-93: 1. What you call today jiwang. Very nice style of slow rock music or ballads that impressed too much not only me but to others too. . Several songs that I later recognized from these recordings were : CINTA [ XPDC] , several songs from May , untukmu selamanya [Visa] antara gadis [Dinamik] , Kau Yang Tak Mengerti [Teja] suci dalam debu, penatian [blackrose], Sentuhan Kecundang [ekamatra], Jawalan kasih [utopia ] all of the 91 collection 2. What you call it pop 80an , as of Jamal’s sendiri .Kazar’s Tiap Waktu Terluang , keresahan [Aini ], rayuanku [R Jalil] and several of nearly same style from Ramlah [hanyala padamu cinta ] as main style of those times. Exotic for the Greek standards. But not meaning the standard ‘pop’ [Aisha, Misha , ram etc ] I think I have found several songs that connect dangdut , sunda and old Malay 80s together 3.Hari Raya :I was more careful on 1993 . Many songs have been aired via Suara Malaysia that period (Jan to March ) and recorded. I was more impressed with Dari-Jauh_Ku_Pohon_Maaf by another singer than Sudirman and ‘mak limah sayang’. Other I liked were selamat hari raya [ahamd jais ] Cahaya Aidilfitri [Black Dog Bone ]
• MY next step was to communicate by standard mail with record companies from Spore and Malaysia by sending tapes with sample songs with Chinese and Malay music asking them to identify and provide me with the related albums . from the referred songs . After a strong hunting , I succeeded buying from Suwah Records ( Spore) a series of albums form Ramlah albums cintaku hanyut, duri dalam cinta , kau kunci , lagu hit A. Nawab and the chinese : zai hui shou , cahnkei nide ke aand one with oldies (Teresa teng? ) and that was only the 4 of the 15 songs noticed
• ON 1994 I have bought a LOWE HF150 shortwave comms receiver , for enhancing reception.. But VoM signal gradually lowered due to solar conditions, so that I stopped listening to it. It was very nice that for 3-4 months RRI Jakarta , using one 500 kW of power , transmitter , so that the signal in my house was so great , that I connected it to a walkman speaker set with nice audio. The time I cold listen was on early afternoons as far as I can remember. I tried to record a bit, but suddenly they reverted to their previous transmitter of 50 kW making reception a little difficult . te most interesting songs • I still remember songs kasih ,(a easy listening song later ‘dangdutized’ by IIs Dahlia) , two songs from Aishah and mengapa by Niki Astria The frequency that time was 9680 kHz and as far as I think, was the third program Their music program except westernized pop included also kroncong and serious music .
A little later the SILVER was totally useless
Does anyone know this song? At first it seems to me as clone of bila rindu of Siti fairuz first heard and recorded on ca 90-91 from shortwaves , Suara Malaysia, though I am not sure if it is older or newer . when I was in spore on 2000 the chairman of the music store advised me that tge singer is Melati. But as I have already heard Melati’s voice, I amk sure this is not her voice in this song. In contrast to it this song seems too ‘weepy’ also in music terms
Can anyone shed light ?
WARNING : very low quality
