My [always?] different New year change…
As oyu might notice in a
previous e-mail , the new years eve
I was listening to several,
possibly specific station having
programs for the New Years .This
was also as far as I can remember the
same for several years ago .
However
that same day does not go so flat
as it can be seen .. Here I will show
you my day’s circa DX activities of the day , considering that still non DX activities are also on
As with
the logs , on 09xx I was listening to Rasant(?) on 9310 from IRRS for somewhere , together with R Hamburg on 6045 , Power FM (??)on 6878
, Mystery radio (my top pirate )
and later with Latvia today
In the mean time I took my parents off the bus station , 10 km from our house , but inside the city and with
some traffic . We live outiwde the city
, on the mountain
Then I was
listening to NHK ‘s special program with the interesting musical program
.
At 1509 (5.09 LT)I turned ON the satellite TV dish and together with my wife and parents we saw the year change in Japan .
MY father was radio operator in commercial
ships and visited from USA to Russia Cuba and Japan those days. As you might read in my main page , he bought many vinyl
records from all those places , and I
found a big interest in Japanese songs , so that on my 4 years of age I
decoded their language …
AS I know
little Japanese, and with the little
help of my father who was reminded by
the pictures , we seen several people
pulling and pushing a very big wooden pendulum rod to hit a big bell, but I do not remember
the city. In another city many people
were in the railway station .
After ca 20 minutes I changed the tv channel and we seen the musical program from CCTV4 with extraordinary performance with dancers and singers playing in a
mix of traditional and ‘modern’ music/songs . There were also subtitles
in Chinese and Englsih . The program seems to be in a ‘open air’ theatre .
Unfortunately the program ended on
0609
I however missed the opportunity to listen to the
CNR’s – 1st prg radio – year change with the bells.
We then looked at
the program of Korean Arirang channel ,
the Viet TV 4 and the tai channel ,btu seems tha t nothing special was
fund as for example the Thai and Viet programs aired some series. I
did not forget however that the
mayor of Bangkok asked not to do a
demonstration this year due to the bombings earlier that month
I then
changed the satellite receiver into Caspionet from Kazakhstan and left. That time my wife
and mother did some day’s work.
Somehow later I watched part of the program. It
was quite impressive. There was a
version of a well know classic music (as of the style of vanesa Mae )
played with rock guitar , violin and a local Kazakh violin . Another for me as Greek was the names of a female group “huzur Lukum”
(leisure plum) two words that come into Greek , lent from Turkish!
At about 2245 LT I was zapping again among AZ TV , Lider from Azerbaijan
, Russian national OIRT 1, and TRT-Int
from Turkey . That time Az TV and
Lider has musical programs as well the ‘live’ pop rock group
concert (?) from TRT but I preferred to
tune into OIRT for their year Change.
There was a public address from Putin
till 2259:30? then the clock from the
cathedral of the Kremlin square was
shown with its gongs before and after the
time change . The picture was fantastic indeed Very imposing buildings from Kremlin let me
very impressed . Sorry but I cannot
totally describe my feelings watching
this wonderful picture.
I then looked
for about a quarter at their
program. It was a humorous program with a main character in the streets of
Moskow(?) while several songs were played same time. As one example a female
singer (singing !)was on the television program asd shown in the TV sets, he watched her and bought a set , put the tv on is car
and finally she was a passenger
in his taxi -car …
A again
left the room leaving the sat system in Caspio-net
Then
(about a )we gone on the
apartment of my in-laws . That time they were finalizing everything for the year change. There was a pie on the table
with us being around it and my mom in
law trying to perfectly prepare (as always) everything. That time we were
watching MEGA TV ,a nationwide commercial TV channel with a live telegame program. That time they were linked via satellite with greek
people in Johannesburg .They also sent regards to their relative in Greece.
Little
before the year change ,the
younger brother of my wife Ephraim turned off the
lights. There was a clock on the TV program. After the clock changed to
0000 , he switched it on and we swapped greetings and kisses , as per the
custom .MY mom in law then took the
knife , crossed the cake and then we
shared the pie into 12 pieces, one for
each of us (8 persons ) one for work , for
house etc. This custom is
concluded by who will be the lucky to
find the coin in his/her pie piece. This
part of the custom is quite ancient originated from ca 1400 AC . Ephraim has
found it
After 0030 LT by, another institution/custom , we
(me and Natassa my wife) left the house
taking Ephraim for his date with his friends inside the
city going to the Aristotelous square , in the centre of the city . Normally
all previous years , the mayor of the city was held a musical demonstration
featuring local and popular singers
starting around 8 pm. This year however the mayor and the municipality’s
counsel prefer to shift the program several hours earlier…

Looking around most of the bars around the square were quite full then we decided to stay outwards. I was quite happy that I had with me
a radio so that I listened a bit to … shortwaves ! I had a good chance
to listen to Voice of Han on 9745 (tough
I was expecting HCJB ) around 0130 LT (2330 )with relatively signals and
nice music and on 0015-35 UTC listening to Warna the malay
service of R Singapore , with several
songs quite known to me !
As the time
passed the weather was cooler so
that we preferred to return home
…. Time passes -…
It is now
1st of January about 1.20 LT (1120) and we are nearly ready to celebrate the New year change , and is
also the day of my mom in law Vasiliki. On the table in our apartment there is a
Vasilopita (=meat pie) made on yesterday 31th by my mother and wife
together . I forgot something and ask my
father what is the time of the Vienna classical
concert , and he replied that this is now the time . I immediately tune in the
sat system and open the HiFi and record the program in our DVD recorder.
The process is exactly he same as with yesterday night, but my mother
instead of me cuts the pie ,and the
funny is that again Ephraim was he lucky
to gain the coin!
